3 practical tips for fasting during Lent

Fasting is a central part of Orthodox life, designed to draw closer to God and grow spiritually, but preparing food during fasting periods, such as Great Lent, can be challenging, especially if you have to feed family members who do not fast.

Here are some practical tips to make fasting days easier and healthier.

The main rule of fasting

Orthodox Christians fast from meat, milk, fish, wine, and oil. On certain days, wine and oil are permitted, but with specifics.

1. Simplify fasting

Prepare breakfast and lunch at the same time each week to reduce planning stress. Choose 5–7 recipes that everyone likes and cook them often. Prepare large quantities and store them for future meals. Use appliances for quick cooking. Chop vegetables with a food processor to save time.

2. Modified Fasting for Families

If some family members are not fasting (e.g. children, people with health needs), you can cook a basic meal without meat and dairy for those fasting and add other elements (like meat or cheese) for the others. The idea is to avoid preparing different meals for each person.

3. Reflection on fasting

Fasting is not just the removal of food, but a means of strengthening control over desires, humility and drawing closer to God, a test of weakness that makes us stronger./ CNA
