A powerful heatwave has swept across Italy and other parts of Europe, bringing extreme temperatures and health warnings in some countries.
Italian authorities have put several cities on red alert, with meteorologists warning that temperatures will continue to rise in the coming days. Florence, Perugia, Brescia and Turin are among the areas where the highest level of danger has been activated, while Rome, Bologna and Frosinone are expected to be included in the list of affected cities.
According to forecasts, the thermometer is expected to reach up to 41 degrees Celsius in many areas of central and southern Italy, while in some inland regions and on the island of Sardinia temperatures could reach up to 45 degrees.
The extreme heat has also brought other consequences for the country. The Piedmont region is facing a shortage of water resources due to drought, while authorities have raised concerns about the impact of the water crisis in the coming days.
The high temperatures have also affected workers who work outdoors. In Florence, food delivery couriers have demanded safer working conditions and protective measures during peak hours of heat.
Other European countries are also grappling with the consequences of extreme weather. In the United Kingdom, high temperatures have increased the risk of wildfires, while in France, wildfires have been reported in forest areas. In Germany, authorities have noted an increase in drownings during the period of high temperatures.
Health authorities in several countries have advised citizens to limit sun exposure during the hottest hours, consume fluids, and take special care of the most vulnerable groups.
Experts warn that extreme heat waves are becoming increasingly frequent in Europe, making coping with high temperatures a constant challenge for authorities and citizens./ CNA
