Study: Eating dinner earlier may improve heart health

A new study suggests that the timing of our dinner may be just as important as the food we eat. According to researchers from Northwestern University, eating dinner at least three hours before bedtime may help improve cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Researchers found that in middle-aged and older adults, who are at higher risk for cardiometabolic disease, extending the overnight fasting period and avoiding food for three hours before bedtime led to significant improvements in several health indicators.

According to them, these benefits are related to the body's circadian rhythm, the biological clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. The digestive system is closely linked to this rhythm, so allowing enough time for digestion before bed helps the body better process nutrients.

The seven-week study found that participants who finished eating at least three hours before bedtime had a 3.5% reduction in blood pressure and a 5% decrease in heart rate. They also showed better control of their blood sugar levels during the day.

Scientists point out that poor cardiovascular health is linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and heart disease.

In conclusion, the researchers recommend that people finish dinner earlier in the evening, as this may help improve metabolism and protect heart health./ CNA
