A new study that followed more than 25,000 women for 25 years shows that women who followed a Mediterranean diet lived much longer than those who did not follow this diet, writes CNN.

According to Dr. Samia Mora of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, following a Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of death by about a quarter, including mortality from cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The Mediterranean diet includes plant-based foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and seeds, with a heavy emphasis on extra virgin olive oil and limited consumption of red meat and refined foods.

Omega-3 fish, eggs, milk and poultry are eaten in smaller portions.

Mediterranean diet beneficial for women's long-term health

The Mediterranean style of eating, known to reduce the risk of breast cancer, dementia, depression, diabetes, high cholesterol and memory loss, also improves bone and heart health and extends life expectancy.

This diet is also effective for healthy weight loss.

However, there is a lack of specific studies on the long-term effects of the Mediterranean diet in women.

Experts stress the importance of such studies as women's bodies and brains work differently than men's.

Women experience different heart attack symptoms, metabolize alcohol and drugs differently, and go through hormonal changes like menarche and menopause, which bring specific health risks./ CNA
