Botox, a cosmetic treatment known for reducing wrinkles, is gaining popularity but has the potential for health effects from long-term use, according to a BBC report.
Reported side effects include pain, swelling or mild bruising at the injection site, headache, and flu-like symptoms for the first 24 hours. Sometimes, temporary weakness may also appear. Most side effects are minor and transient.
This report highlights the potential risk of using Botox long-term, but also notes that for most people, the treatment is safe and effective for reducing wrinkles.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's warning about adverse reactions to Botox misuse came after 22 women ages 25-59 reported serious symptoms in April 2024.
In these cases, 11 of them were hospitalized and six were treated for toxins that spread beyond the injection site and affected the central nervous system, causing muscle paralysis, breathing difficulties.

Reported symptoms included blurred vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, fatigue, and weakness.
These cases occurred after women received Botox injections from unlicensed or untrained people in places that did not have health care facilities.
A similar scenario occurred in 2023 in the United Kingdom, where another 67 cases were reported after Botox injections for weight loss from a private hospital in Izmir, Turkey.
Professor of plastic surgery at University College London, Ash Mosahebi, expresses concern about counterfeit Botox injections that are circulating.
He notes that the genuine toxin, from a trusted brand, does not cause serious side effects, but the dubious, poorly manufactured versions can have serious health consequences.
A 2023 study by Mosaheb and colleagues showed that 69% of respondents experienced long-term negative effects from Botox, such as anxiety and headaches.

This situation also brought serious psychological and emotional consequences for the patients.
Studies have found that long-term cosmetic use of Botox can cause permanent changes in facial expression, leaving people unable to flex their facial muscles.
A 2022 study found that individuals who regularly received Botox injections showed changes in the composition, function and appearance of their muscles up to four years after the last injection.
This suggests the possibility of long-term consequences of using Botox for cosmetic purposes, which may affect the natural expression of the face for a long time./ CNA
