Proteins in the blood can warn of cancer 7 years before diagnosis

Scientists from the University of Oxford have identified proteins in the blood that can warn of cancer more than seven years before diagnosis.

The researchers found 618 proteins associated with 19 types of cancer, including colon, prostate and breast cancer.

Some 107 proteins were found in a group of people whose blood was collected at least seven years before diagnosis, and the discovery could be a "crucial first step" towards preventive therapy, Sky News reports.

Two studies, funded by the Cancer Research UK group, show that the presence of certain proteins can have an effect on the formation of cancer cells.

"To be able to prevent cancer, we need to understand the factors that drive the earliest stages of its development. We now have the technology to look at thousands of proteins in thousands of cancers, identifying which proteins play a role in the development of specific cancers and which may have effects that are common to multiple types of cancer," said Professor Ruth Travis.

The chief executive of Cancer Research UK, Ian Fox, stressed that preventing cancer means being aware of the earliest warning signs of the disease and that these studies will provide the first step towards finding preventative treatments.

The scientists stressed that further research is needed to discover the exact role of proteins in cancer development and which proteins to look for. It is also necessary to work on the development of tests for the detection of proteins and drugs that can be used for their treatment.

The results of the research were published in the journal Nature Communications. /CNA
