Trump orders ICE: Don't stop roadside checks

President Donald Trump has opposed the immigration agency's (ICE) decision to suspend vehicle stops on the streets, describing them as one of the most important tools for fighting crime.

The president's intervention comes after ICE announced a nationwide moratorium on vehicle impoundments, following harsh criticism following two recent fatal shootings in Texas and Maine involving ICE agents.

In a social media reaction, Trump declared that roadblocks are essential and that abandoning them would serve criminals. Although his border adviser, Tom Homan, had previously stated that the suspension would be temporary to conduct a review of procedures, the president made it clear that he would not accept any compromise on this operational tactic.

The situation has become increasingly tense after recent killings – in one case where agents fatally shot a person who was not their intended target – have sparked protests and serious concerns in Congress. Democratic Senator Dick Durbin sharply criticized ICE's methods, saying that deportation and arrest "quotas" are creating a climate of terror and fear, while agents are ignoring basic rules of good policing.

Since January 2025, at least seven people have lost their lives during immigration enforcement operations. Despite these tragic events and calls for reform, the Trump administration remains steadfast in its tough approach to deportations, refusing to change tactics that the White House sees as the cornerstone of its strategy to reduce crime in the country. /CNA
