Cardiac arrest often occurs without any warning signs, but one study found that half of people who experienced a sudden cardiac arrest had a noticeable symptom 24 hours earlier.

Furthermore, researchers have found that these warning symptoms are different between men and women.

According to them, the most obvious symptom for women 24 hours before cardiac arrest was shortness of breath. For men, chest pain was the main symptom.

Based on this, Dr. Sumeet Chugh, the lead author of this study, has some advice for both sexes.

"In counseling patients, especially those known to have heart problems, health care providers can make them aware that women with shortness of breath have a 3-fold higher risk of cardiac arrest and men with sudden chest pains have a 2-fold increased risk. In these situations, it would be prudent to seek emergency care", Dr. Chugh.

The study that revealed this fact was conducted by the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Health System and published in the journal "Lancet Digital HealthTrusted Source"./ CNA
