New study/ More vegetables and fruits for better sleep

A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition by an interdisciplinary team from the University of Finland in Helsinki, the National Institute of Health and Welfare and the Turku University of Applied Sciences suggests that consuming fruits and vegetables can improve sleep duration.

This study examined the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and sleep duration, excluding the influence of chronotype.

Main Findings, Participants and Methodology

The study analyzed data from the National FinHealth Study 2017, including 5,043 adults aged 18 and over (55.9% women, mean age 55).

Participants reported their diet and sleep habits over a one-year period.

Duration of Sleep

Three categories were identified: little sleep (less than 7 hours/day – 21%), normal sleep (7-9 hours/day – 76.1%) and a lot of sleep (over 9 hours/day – 2.9% ).

Chronotype: Participants were categorized into morning (22.4%), evening (15.9%) and intermediate (61.7%) types.

Results, Fruits and Vegetables

Regular fruit and vegetable consumption was associated with better sleep.

People who slept normally consumed more green leafy vegetables and fruit vegetables (eg, tomatoes, cucumbers) compared to those who slept less or more.

Fresh Fruits

Consumption of berries and other fresh fruit was higher in those who had a normal sleep compared to those who slept less.

Meanwhile, only apple consumption showed a significant difference between normal sleepers and long sleepers.

Implications and Recommendations

The researchers suggest that interventions that focus on the consumption of specific fruits and vegetables, such as green leafy vegetables, may lead to effective sleep improvements.

They recommend that further studies, particularly longitudinal ones, be conducted to better understand these associations and the implications for public health.

This research reinforces the importance of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables for improving sleep quality and overall well-being./ CNA
