Are 10,000 steps a day enough to lose weight?/ What do the studies say?

Recent research from Brigham Young University (BYU) has shown that walking actually brings health benefits even if it's 7,500 steps instead of 10,000 a day, but for anyone who wants to lose weight, walking isn't enough.

Researchers from BYU's Department of Physical Education and Department of Dietetics and Nutrition conducted studies and their goal was to evaluate whether taking 10,000 steps a day would minimize weight gain in college students.

Participants wore pedometers 24 hours a day for six weeks. Before the study, they took about 9,600 steps a day. Along the way, they were divided into three groups and walked 10,000, 12,500 or 15,000 steps a day, six days a week for 24 weeks, while their calorie intake and weight were recorded.

At the end of the study, participants in the 10,000-step group had reached 11,066 steps per day, in the 12,500-step group at 13,638 steps, and in the 15,000-step group at 14,557 steps per day.

The research findings showed that even more than 15,000 steps did not prevent weight gain. Students' weight increased by about 1.5 kilograms, which is consistent with previous research findings in which students gain one to four kilograms in their first academic year.

Although weight was not affected by the increase in steps, walking changed their lifestyle by significantly reducing sedentary time in both the 12,500 and 15,000 step groups. In fact, in the 15,000 step group, sitting time was reduced by 77 minutes per day.

According to Bruce Bailey, a professor of physical education at BYU, reducing sedentary life alone is a good reason to incorporate walking into our lives.
