May 11th Elections/ Validity period for identification documents extended

The Minister of Interior, Ervin Hoxha, in a statement to the media, announced that the validity period for identification documents has been extended, in the context of the May 11 elections.

Hoxha said that this decision came after it turns out that there are a considerable number of citizens with the right to vote whose identification documents have expired or will expire by May 11.

Full statement

At today's meeting of the Council of Ministers, two very important acts were approved to extend the validity period of identity documents, which have expired or will expire on May 11, 2025, for citizens residing within the territory of the Republic of Albania.

From an analysis of the data, it results that there are a considerable number of citizens with the right to vote whose electronic ID cards and biometric passports have expired or are about to expire by May 11. These are necessary documents to participate in the voting process.

The adoption of normative acts is undertaken with the aim of guaranteeing the constitutional right of all citizens to vote without obstacles in general parliamentary elections.

According to this decision, the validity period of identification means, electronic ID cards and biometric passports that expire on May 11, 2025 - is extended until May 31, 2025.

Recently, political entities have requested the CEC, the Ministry of Interior, and the Council of Ministers to extend the validity period of expired documents.

We would like to inform you that, in January 2025, the CEC addressed the government with a request regarding the problem of the validity of identification documents for citizens living outside Albania.

In February 2025, Normative Acts were approved, which related to the extension of the validity period of documents for Albanian citizens in the diaspora.

The Ministry of Interior, in cooperation with the CEC, subordinate institutions, such as the Civil Status Service, or other agencies, have taken all measures to fulfill legal obligations, to ensure that the May 11 election process takes place peacefully and without obstacles for our citizens abroad and within the borders.

All measures have been taken for the smooth conduct of the electoral process from a security point of view. The State Police will be on reinforced duty to successfully handle the process before, during and after the close of voting, correctly implementing the law and the obligations arising from the Electoral Code.

Taking advantage of this communication, I would like to inform all citizens that intensive work is being done to guarantee the smooth running of the important activities that will be held in Albania these days, which are the "Giro d'Italia" on May 8, 9 and 10, as well as the Summit of the European Political Community, which will be held on May 16, in Tirana.

I ask for the understanding of citizens regarding the mandatory traffic and road closures, which, as they have begun to be announced, will be made public in detail by the General Directorate of the State Police./ CNA
