Rama pays homage to "January 21", addressed to SPAK: We are waiting

Prime Minister Edi Rama, during the tributes held for the 4 victims of "January 21", said that we are now waiting for SPAK to start the investigations on this file, after several years of delays. 

He called this event a state crime and said that investigations have been delayed due to problems or interventions in the justice system. 

"The other sign of the awakening of justice is the activity of the Prosecutor's Office and the Special Court, which has recently entered a new meaningful phase, finally breaking the layered ice of 100 or so years between the Albanian state and justice. Between the two today is a date announced by the Supreme Court of Albania, February 27, 2024, we will find out if the blood file of January 21 will be passed for review to the SPAK to finally open the investigation for the state crime. SPAK and the Special Court are giving encouraging evidence that justice in this country is possible. Other parts of the justice system are asleep and there are files turning yellow. The Prosecutor's Office of the Judicial District of Tirana is one of these systems," said Rama. 

Today marks 13 years since the serious event, where four people were killed on the boulevard "Dëshmorët e Kombit" and many others were injured.

On January 21, 2011, Aleks Nika, Ziver Veizi, Hekuran Deda and Faik Myrtaj were killed during the opposition protest.

On January 21, the then opposition, now in government, protested in front of the Prime Minister's Office. The protest degraded into violence and clashes, while fire was opened from inside the Prime Minister's Office, bringing the tragic balance with four victims.

The gathering happened after the publication of a video on the show "Fiks Fare", where Ilir Meta, then deputy prime minister in the Berisha government, appeared with a black pad in his hand, making bargains with the late former minister, Dritan Prifti. /CNA
