"We are closely following the developments of the investigation"/ EU

The European Union has reacted today regarding the arrest of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj. According to this reaction, the EU is closely following the latest developments regarding the investigation of Erion Veliaj.

The EU emphasizes that it remains fully committed to supporting Albania's efforts in pursuing justice reforms.

"We are closely following the latest developments regarding the investigation against the Mayor of Tirana. However, the EU does not comment on ongoing judicial proceedings.
Justice sector reform and strengthening the rule of law in Albania are key elements in the European Union accession process.

The EU remains fully committed to supporting Albania's efforts in pursuing these reforms and to helping the country consolidate the efficiency, independence, accountability and professionalism of its institutions, as well as their compliance with EU standards, both in the law enforcement and justice sectors.

"The specific role of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) and its independence in investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating complex corruption cases, without any attempt at political interference or undue pressure, are of fundamental importance for the consolidation of the rule of law in Albania," the European Union said in a statement. /CNA
