Lulzim Basha shows no signs of remorse after expelling Sali Berisha from the Parliamentary Group of the DP, on September 9, 2021. With that decision, Basha deepened the division among the democrats, while for as long as he was at the head of the party he led the largest opposition force from loss to loss. Despite this, Basha says that he has not regretted the expulsion of Berisha, as according to him he took the decision with great sacrifice for the public interest.

"How can I regret a decision that I made with great sacrifice for a great public and political interest. Of course, those who have put their personal interest over the public interest, over the interest of the democrats, and by doing this they have also decided over the interest of Albania, should be sorry," he said.

As Basha took a decision at the time without asking any party forum, he continued to say that he had conversations with Berisha, even though the latter described the decision of September 9 as Basha's personal position, without consultation.

"This decision did not come overnight, as is already publicly known. I have been in a process of long talks with Mr. Berisha, which has lasted almost three months, to try to find a solution that would not harm the Democratic Party at a very delicate moment. I had moments when I was convinced that we were approaching a decision-making that would accept the placement of personal interests below the great political interests of the DP and Albania. But unfortunately, such a moment was not reached until I was forced to take decisions that I took on September 9", he declared.
