He was not on the ballot at all and yet he won the election...

A mayor that no one had on the list - in the literal sense of the word!

It is a small democratic miracle that happened last Sunday in Röttingen, Germany (population 1,700): Steffen Romstöck (age 44) was elected as the new mayor with almost 52 percent of the vote - although his name did not it wasn't even on the ballot.

How did this happen? Citizens simply wrote his name by hand!

Because: There was only one candidate on the ballot, Jürgen Boier (CSU). It was proposed by all three factions of the City Council (Free Citizens, Independent Citizens and CSU).

The residents of Röttingen felt cheated, thinking they had no real choice - and jumped into action: They spread instructions in WhatsApp groups on how to write Romstöck's name correctly on the ballot.

Why exactly him? The 44-year-old has been on the City Council since 2020, "BILD" reveals that he was even asked if he wanted to run. But he refused: "I am satisfied with my work at the University of Würzburg."

He was then asked how he would react if people voted for him anyway. Romstöck: "I answered: I can't stop them."

On Thursday afternoon he vacated his post at the university.

But aren't the elections invalid? No – Bavarian electoral law makes it possible! The Free State only allows additional names to be added to an approved candidate (Section 40 of the Bavarian Municipal Elections Act). However, this is not possible in federal or state elections./ Bild
