Gas agreement/ Rama: Vlora becomes a critical point for energy in Southeast

Prime Minister Edi Rama delivered his speech at the signing ceremony of the energy security agreement between Albania, the US and Greece.

Rama stated that energy determines the country's economic strength and added that Albania aims to become a net energy exporting country within this mandate.

Among other things, he stated that with this agreement, Vlora becomes a critical point for energy in Southeast Europe.

"There was a time in our lives when energy was a matter of supply, to keep the lights on as long as possible in a 24-hour period. On the other hand, we lived in a country where, until a decade ago, half the population paid for the other half, while all the wealth produced by our system was, in effect, mismanaged and stolen."

OSHEE, until a decade ago, was on the verge of bankruptcy and was kept alive by government subsidies. The debt was more than 5% of GDP. Today, energy determines our security, our economic power and the ambition for the place it occupies in the region and in Europe: to achieve, within this mandate, to become a net energy exporter. A key element of this journey is the partnership with the US, which is based on a shared commitment to energy security.

Vlora will become a critical point for energy in Southeast Europe. I emphasize the importance of what Ambassador Guilfoyle said, about the need for us, Greece and Albania, to strengthen the connection and cooperation in many ways, but especially when it comes to energy supply, production, resilience and independence. The partnership of Albania and the US sends a message: even small countries can take bold steps and become part of the solution to the most pressing challenges of our time. Even more than that, the message today could not be clearer when it comes to connecting the vital need for energy with the need for freedom and democracy: not to rely on actors who provide energy, but can put you in a difficult position with freedom and the objective of strengthening democracy. I want to emphasize the importance of this agreement. I want to congratulate our team for the unusual speed of its implementation; it was also under my pressure” , said Rama.  /CNA
