Informality in tourism/ Berisha: Major problem that affects the country's

The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, held a conversation today with tourism associations in the country. In his speech, Berisha focused on informality in tourism.

Berisha stated that tourism has a very major problem and that is the fact that there is an extraordinary degree of informality.

Berisha said that compared to the country in the region, Albania registers the most tourist overnight stays.

Berisha added that formalization is also a security issue for the state in relation to tourism.

"Tourism has a very major problem.

The major problem is the informality in which this sector floats. This informality hits honest entrepreneurs. It hits entrepreneurs with transparent investments.

This informality in Albania, if we compare it with Montenegro, is like this. Montenegro with 2.8 million tourists per year, records 16.8 million overnight stays. Albania with 10 million tourists per year, records 6, last year 7 million overnight stays. If we do not compare it with Croatia which records about 100 million overnight stays.

So we have an extraordinary degree of informality.

The formalization of tourism is perhaps one of the most fundamental conditions.

There are three or four times as many beds, and they are apartments compared to hotels, which in many respects puts the hotel industry in a difficult position.

We will not use and do not intend to ban AirBnB, but formalization is a necessary condition if we want to properly utilize this major potential that we have.

Formalization is also a security issue, because you are expecting a tourist, but the one who comes to our country has a responsibility towards him and absolutely, under the most favorable conditions, we will do everything to formalize tourism.

Because it can't be done... look at how a place with such extraordinary potential is being reduced to this extraordinary informality.

"This is not the right development that the country should have," Berisha said./CNA
