Tirana Mayor Erjon Veliaj has ended up under the "magnifying glass" of justice as he is accused of four criminal offenses such as money laundering, active and passive corruption, and concealment of assets.

Recently, in a television appearance, Tirana City Council member Ilda Zhulali demanded that Erjon Veliaj be held responsible for the incinerator affair and the "5D" company, as he is the one who signed the contract and is now hiding behind his company.

"It is a great absurdity of the situation we find ourselves in this city. We have been protesting for 41 consecutive weeks, first demanding the resignation of Erion Veliaj for two major scandals involving theft and major corruption.

The first is about the non-existent incinerator and the second is about the theft scheme through the 5D company set up by the directors of the Municipality of Tirana.

"Veliaj does not feel any responsibility for any of this, but he wants to hide from the signature he has cast as president of this institution," Zhulali said. /CNA
