Bajram Begaj was sworn in today in Parliament and officially took office as President of the Republic.

During the ceremony, Begaj gave a series of messages about politics, but one detail highlights the funny speech of the new Head of State.

"Our dear Albania has entered an irreversible European path; the earlier legacy of dilemmas and doubts about its orientation, now belongs to the past", was one of the statements of the new President, as he addressed the Assembly.

But it is precisely this sentence that makes his entire speech ridiculous, since Albania has not yet entered the European path.

In fact, since the overthrow of the dictatorship and the establishment of democracy, Albania has never had any doubts about the country's European orientation.

The goal of all Albanians and Albania has been and is the road to the EU, but this road did not start in 2022.

Officially recognized by the EU as a "potential candidate state" in 2000, Albania began negotiations with the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) in 2003.

This was successfully agreed upon and signed on June 12, 2006, thus completing the first important step towards Albania's full membership in the EU. Albania applied for membership in the European Union in April 2009 and negotiations to become a member of the EU have already been officially opened./ BA - CNA.al
