Financing of election campaigns/ Celibashi: There is also illegal money, the

State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi said today that the problem with financing parties and election campaigns in Albania is related not only to money coming from the state budget, but also to undeclared money.

During the interview with "Euronews Albania", Celibashi stated that there is also illegal money that was used to disguise its purpose in electoral activities, while emphasizing that citizens have the right to know details of these expenses for transparency.

"These are funds that are not part of the state budget, but are given by private individuals, citizens, or businesses that the law allows them to contribute. There are ceilings for these donations from 500 thousand lek for individuals to 10 million lek for companies. Illegal funds are those that are not declared and are used by disguising their purpose in political or electoral activities. To prevent abuses, the Commission needs real capacities and cooperation with other institutions to verify the sources of funding. The main problem is related to candidates. The vast majority of them do not know that they have the obligation to report the funding they receive. This issue requires awareness, but also legal regulation to guarantee transparency and effective controls", - said Celibashi. /CNA
