DP Chairman, Sali Berisha

The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has recalled the 35th anniversary of the powerful demonstrations of January 13-14, 1990, for the overthrow of the bust of communist dictator Joseph Stalin.

In his Facebook post, Berisha stated that this historic event opened the door to a series of major events of that year that would culminate in the establishment of political pluralism in Albania with the student movement of December 1990.

"Today, January 14, is the 35th anniversary of the anti-communist demonstration in Shkodra!
Like 35 years ago today, anti-communist groups, citizens and students of Shkodra University inaugurated the new year in Albania, the year of miracle for Albanians with a fierce battle with the communist dictatorship, the powerful demonstrations of January 13-14, 1990, for the overthrow of the bust of the communist dictator Joseph Stalin.

On January 13, and especially on January 14, 1990, thousands of citizens of Shkodra answered the call of anti-communist groups, filled the streets and squares and took part in a powerful demonstration to free their city from the cult of one of the bloodiest dictators of all time, Joseph Stalin, and remove his bust from the city center.

The dictatorial regime cruelly and brutally suppressed the January 14 demonstration with all means of violence and arrested, tortured and sentenced its organizers to severe sentences for anti-state terrorist activities: Dedë Kasneci, Rin Monajka, Flamur Elbasani, Gjergj Livadhi, Ndoc Liqëjza, the Haxhi brothers, Gjovalin Ralba, Viktor Martini, Nikolin Thana, Tonin Dema, Nikolin Margjini, Bac Bilali, Ylli Gërshana, Klaudio Daka, Aldo Perizi, the Alibali brothers, Hana Kraja, etc.

But the echo of the powerful anti-communist demonstration of Shkodra, its citizens, resonated strongly in all four corners of the country, but also throughout the world. This historic event opened the door to a series of major events of that year that would culminate in the establishment of political pluralism in Albania with the student movement of December 1990.

Today, on this 35th anniversary, let us, dear friends, express our deepest respect and gratitude to the participating citizens and organizers of the January 14, 1990 demonstration in Shkodra, the Rozafa of Freedom.
Long live Shkodra!" /CNA
