Corruption, money laundering, false asset declarations... On December 26, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, was questioned for five hours by the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK).

Suspected of "passive corruption of high state officials and local elected officials", according to Article 260 of the Criminal Code, he risks a sentence of four to 12 years in prison and a fine of one to five million Albanian Lek.

Since April 2024, the opposition organizes weekly protests in front of Tirana's municipality. Until now, no less than 39 rallies have been held to demand the criminal prosecution of Erion Veliaj.

"Erion Veliaj, de facto owner of Tirana's incinerator and head of the 5D criminal group, must face justice as the initiator, promoter, executor and main beneficiary of the biggest corruption issue our city has ever known!", he declared. on Facebook Belind Këlliçi, former deputy of the Democratic Party (PD) and former candidate for mayor of Tirana.

Although Erion Veliaj, a key figure of the ruling Socialist Party, has been facing a series of numerous checks from the judiciary since the beginning of December, it remains unclear whether this will bring concrete results.

A recent SPAK investigation has raised doubts about privileges granted to his family, including apartments and offices, in exchange for services provided to a former drug trafficker convicted in Belgium.

Do these investigations represent a fundamentally reformed justice or just a facade?

At first sight, the investigation seems to fulfill the promises of an "impartial justice". However, making a broader analysis, doubts arise: the Tirana incinerator and the 5D company, which are the source of large-scale scandals, are not mentioned at all, suggesting that Erion Veliaj can be held responsible for his individual actions, but not for his role in a general system of corruption.

His family's wealth, especially that of his wife AjolaXoxa, is also a matter of contention.

According to the wealth declarations, Erion Veliaj leads a modest life with a mortgage loan and a moderate salary, but his wife seems to enjoy a much more favorable financial situation.

Pasi Arbër Veliaj u bë aksioner i vetëm i Gogël, kompania përjetoi një rritje të shpejtë, duke kaluar mbi 30 milionë euro të ardhura gjatë dhjetë viteve të fundit.

SPAK duhet të hetojë ekzistencën e mundshme të konflikteve të interesit me klientët e Gogël që kanë përfituar fonde nga bashkia.

Rënia e Erion Veliajt është pasojë e një seri vendimesh të gabuara politike dhe marrëdhënieve të tensionuara me mentorin e tij, kryeministrin socialist Edi Rama. Që nga fillimi i tij në PS, Erion Veliaj ka kultivuar një besnikëri të palëkundur ndaj këtij të fundit, duke shpresuar se kjo do t’i garantonte një ngritje të shpejtë dhe mbrojtje politike.

Që në vitin 2024, kishin nisur të shfaqeshin shenja paralajmëruese. Në shkurt 2024, gjatë një mbledhjeje të PS, kryeministri kritikoi publikisht Erion Veliajn për mbledhje të konsideruara "të panevojshme" dhe për një qëndrim që nuk përmbushte pritshmëritë. Kjo shënoi fillimin e fundit për kryetarin e kryeqytetit, i cili nuk arriti të kuptonte se këto kritika ishin një kthesë vendimtare.

Pavarësisht këtyre presioneve, Erion Veliaj vazhdoi të shfaqte vetëbesim të pakufishëm, i bindur për mbështetjen e Edi Ramës.

Në mars, SPAK arrestoi dy zyrtarë të lartë të bashkisë që ishin të afërt me të. Një muaj më parë, në shkurt, gjatë vizitës së Sekretarit Amerikan të Shtetit, Anthony Blinken, në Tiranë, Erion Veliaj, i cili nuk ishte i ftuar në ceremoninë zyrtare, ngulmoi t'i shtrëngonte dorën diplomatit amerikan, gjë që acaroi Edi Ramën, duke bërë që kryeministri të distancohej publikisht nga kryetari i bashkisë.

Situata u përkeqësua edhe më tej në prill, kur Erion Veliaj u thirr nga SPAK për t’u marrë në pyetje mbi incineratorin e Tiranës, një nga skandalet më të mëdha të korrupsionit në kryeqytetin shqiptar. Presioni u bë i papërballueshëm, kritikat brenda PS-sëu intensifikuan dhe mbështetja e Edi Ramës u zbeh.
