EU proposes plan to phase out Russian gas by end of 2027

The European Commission will propose next month a ban on new Russian gas deals until the end of this year and a ban on imports under existing contracts with Moscow until the end of 2027, according to a draft document seen by Reuters and expected to be published this week.

The European Union set a non-binding goal to end imports of Russian fossil fuels by 2027 following Moscow's full invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A draft roadmap, setting out how the Commission plans to phase out Russian energy, said it would present a legal proposal in June to ban remaining imports of Russian gas and LNG under existing contracts by the end of 2027.

As reported by French media, the Commission will also propose in June a ban on imports under new Russian gas import agreements and spot contracts until the end of 2025, said the draft, which could still change before it is published.

"If implemented in line with global market developments and reliable suppliers, the gradual cessation of Russian gas imports is expected to have a limited impact on European energy prices and security of supply," the draft states.

The legal proposals will need the approval of the European Parliament and a reinforced majority of EU countries./CNA
