Bylykbashi: The validity period of identification means should be extended so

The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party, Oerd Bylykbashi, gave a statement to the media today, where he highlighted the situation with identification means on the eve of the May 11 elections. In his speech, Bylykbashi stated that 466 thousand citizens with the right to vote do not have a valid identity document, neither an ID card nor a passport.

Bylykbashi said that the Albanian Government extended the validity only for voters living outside Albania, discriminating against those in Albania.

Bylykbashi made a request to the CEC, as the supreme body in the conduct of the elections, to forcefully request the government so that these citizens have the opportunity to vote.

“Today, there are 466,000 citizens with the right to vote who do not have a valid identity document, neither an ID card nor a passport. The Albanian government extended the validity only for voters living outside Albania, discriminating against those who are in Albania. This discrimination is unconstitutional and endangers the right to vote of these 466,000 citizens who reside in Albania, and on May 11th want to vote and express their constitutional right. We ask the government to issue the normative act without delay and extend the validity of identity documents only for electoral reasons, so that these citizens on May 11th will be able to vote. We ask the CEC, as the supreme body in the conduct of the elections, to strongly request the government so that these citizens will be able to vote. We also draw the attention of international mechanisms for election observation, such as the OSCE-ODIHR, the OSCE, the Council of Europe and any other international institution, to "point out this violation of the rights of Albanians. This should be done now, immediately, so that on May 11th all Albanians have the right to speak out for change, to change this autocratic regime," the statement said. /CNA
