Assembly of Municipalities of Albania/ Mayor of Kavaja, Qosja clarifies

The President of the Association of Municipalities and Local Elected Officials, Fisnik Qosja, has made a press release regarding his participation in the General Assembly of the National Association of Municipalities of Albania.

Qosja says that the participation was in the capacity of the president of the association within the framework of a collaboration with organizations of local elected officials.

The mayor of Kavaja says that when it comes to the interests of the country, political divisions are put aside.

This reaction came after some information spread regarding the association's cooperation with socialist mayors.

In my capacity as President of the Association of Municipalities and Local Elected Officials, as well as leader of the highest forum of local elected officials of opposition parties, I would like to publicly clarify some information spread in some media and social networks, related to the cooperation with the National Association of Municipalities, to which colleagues supported by the Socialist Party and the majority parties adhere.

My participation in the Assembly held on September 20th was exclusively in my capacity as President of the Association of Municipalities and Local Elected Officials, within the framework of a normal practice of annual cooperation and coordination between the two representative organizations of local elected officials. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the issues related to local government in Albania and, above all, to send a clear message to our international partners, the European Commission, the Council of Europe, the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, that when it comes to the strategic interests of the country and integration, we put aside political divisions to cooperate for the common good. This is what we have done and this is what we will always continue to do.

Having said this, I would like to emphasize that, beyond this correct and institutional cooperation, no merger or inclusion in each other's structures has occurred.

The Association that I lead remains fully loyal to the decisions of the Assembly, which clearly stipulates that we will cooperate with our colleagues, other organizations and state institutions only in the function of the public interest and the consolidation of local autonomy, while preserving intact the identity and mission of the Association that exclusively represents municipalities and elected local councilors from the opposition./CNA
