The arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who is facing 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, has taken a decision for the Municipality of Tirana this Tuesday, although he is in detention. From his cell in Durrës prison, Veliaj has signed an order to start preparations for the capital's festive decorations for the end of the year.

Veliaj's decision comes a few days after the Constitutional Court ousted Prime Minister Edi Rama and the government, thus giving Veliaj the opportunity to undertake his first "important" act behind bars, that of beautifying Tirana.

According to the order signed by him, the Decoration and Events Company must immediately begin preparations for the installation of lighting in squares, streets and public spaces.

This action is seen as an attempt by Veliaj to show that he still has influence over the municipal administration, despite the difficult legal situation he finds himself in.
