Berisha's suspension from Parliament/DP: Act of censorship, the majority

The head of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, reacted today regarding yesterday's decision to suspend the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, from the Assembly for 10 days, following his statements towards the EU Ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato.

Bardhi describes it as an act of censorship and emphasizes that these actions by the majority are simply proof that they serve Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Full reaction:

The socialist majority is proving every day with its acts and actions that the Albanian Parliament has been transformed into a one-party body, where the rule and the law are openly violated. In an unprecedented act, without committing any violation of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, the majority has taken a decision to prevent for 10 days the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Sali Berisha, from exercising his responsibilities in relation to the citizens in the Albanian Parliament.

This decision is not simply unconstitutional, but is clear evidence that the majority MPs do not serve the interests of the citizens, but only the political interests of Edi Rama. This is the first time in the history of pluralism in the country, where a MP, without committing any violation of the Rules of Procedure, is prevented from exercising his function, by a political decision of the majority, simply because he has freely expressed, outside the Assembly hall, his opinion on a draft law strongly opposed by the vast majority of Albanian society.

The Democratic Party Parliamentary Group considers this decision arbitrary, illegal, unacceptable and a flagrant violation of the rights of the opposition. Such acts that aim at censorship, aimed at intimidating the truth, will not only fail, but will make the truth have an even louder voice.

The expulsion of opposition MPs from the Assembly, due to their free speech, has now become a practice of this illegitimate majority. After violating the free and fair elections on May 11, they are showing day by day that they want to violate parliamentarism or the basic rules of the democratic functioning of the Assembly. The opposition MPs neither accept nor will they allow such degradation. The opposition MPs will respond to any such provocation in a proportionate manner, in order for the Assembly to return to democratic normality and its functioning according to the Rules of Procedure and the Constitution. /CNA
