The Albanian Radio Television Union has reacted after the statement of the leader of the Mundësia party, Agron Shehaj, that RTSH should be closed because no one watches it and it spends 30 million euros a year from Albanian taxes.

The reaction states that Agron Shehaj has crossed a red line with the media.

The RTSH union demands the reaction of international institutions and directly the OSCE Presence in Albania as the organization that has invested in the training of employees of Radio Television Albania, US Embassy Tirana, European Broadcasting Union - EBU and the Albanian Central Election Commission.

It demands the withdrawal of candidate Agron Shehaj from threatening statements against 1046 RTSH employees throughout Albania, from antenna maintenance workers to the corps of journalists.

He demands a public apology from Agron Shehaj, otherwise we suspect his personal intentions in attacking RTSH.

Agron Shehaj CROSSED THE RED LINE WITH THE MEDIA

The ALBANIAN RADIO TELEVISION UNION expresses its indignation at the political and electoral use of public media by one of the candidates in the Parliamentary elections.

His proposal to lay off hundreds of employees, each valued in their profession, is crossing a red line and a violation of Media Freedom in Albania.

Mr. Agron Shehaj cannot even think of comparing public media with private media. Their mission is commercial, while RTSH Radio Television Albanian is guided by the representation of all social categories in the country.

Mr. Agron Shehaj's statements about the level of professionalism of RTS cannot be made from a coffee shop or a party's electoral office.

His goal, clearly populism to gather votes, does not serve media freedom.
