34 years since the anti-communist demonstration in Shkodra/Berisha: It opened

Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha remembered the anti-communist demonstrators of Shkodra, on its 34th anniversary.

Through a status on social networks, Berisha says that thousands of people from Shkodra responded to the call of anti-communist groups and came out in a powerful demonstration to free their city from the cult of one of the bloodiest dictators of all time, Joseph Stalin.

He declares that this historic event opened the door to a series of great events of that year that would be crowned with the establishment of political pluralism in Albania, with the student movement of December 1990.

34 years since the anti-communist demonstration in Shkodra/Berisha: It opened

"Today, January 14, the 34th anniversary of the Shkodra anti-communist demonstration!

Dear friends, today, 34 years ago, anti-communist groups, citizens and students of the University of Shkodra inaugurated the New Year in Albania, the year of the miracle for Albanians with a fierce battle with the communist dictatorship, the powerful demonstrations of January 13-14 1990 for the bust of communist dictator Joseph Stalin.

On the 13th and especially on the 14th of January 1990, thousands of citizens of Shkodra responded to the call of anti-communist groups, filled up and went out in a powerful demonstration to free their city from the cult of one of the bloodiest dictators of all time, Josif Stalin and removed his bust from the city center.

The dictatorial regime cruelly and brutally suppressed the January 14 demonstration and arrested, tortured and sentenced its organizers Ded Kasnec, Rin Monajka, Flamur Elbasnani, Gjergj Livadhin, Ndoc Liqejza, the Haxh brothers, Gjovalin Ralba, Viktor Martini, Nikolin Thana, Tonin Dema, Nikolin Margjini, Bac Bilali, Ylli Gërshana, Claudio Daka, Aldo Perizi, the Alibali Hana Kraja brothers, etc.

But the echo of the powerful anti-communist demonstration of Shkodra, its citizens, strongly influenced all four corners of the country, but also around the world. This historic event opened the door to a series of great events of that year that would be crowned with the establishment of political pluralism in Albania with the student movement of December 1990.

Today, on this 34th anniversary, let us, dear friends, express our deepest respect and gratitude to the participating citizens and organizers of the demonstration of January 14, 1990 in Shkodra, Rozafa e Lirisia. Long live Shkodra!" writes Berisha./ CNA
