After the acquisition of the most important and beautiful Albanian island by Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, there is a rush by the socialists to present Rama's political investment as a strategic investment for the Albanian economy. According to this narrative, Sazani is a worthless rock that Kushner will turn into a tourist wonder that will develop the Albanian image and tourism beyond our poor imagination.

It is interesting to note that whenever the socialist government gives international strategic investors, and their local partners, a morsel of Albania, the first step is to devalue the morsel. In the case of the port of Durres, Prime Minister Rama and the Renaissance propaganda did not stop at describing Albania's largest port as a stinking center of filth, contamination, and as a disgrace in the heart of the coastal city.

So much so that it was created that the Arab investor who got this dirty plot of land in the heart of Durrës and Albania for free was doing us a great honor. The Prime Minister himself told us that he had hardly convinced Alabar to take that stinking piece of land in the middle of Durrës, for which, apparently, no one else was interested. As if the people of Durrës and Albanians had been waiting for years to get rid of hundreds of thousands of square meters of coastline in the heart of Albania.

Today, with the island of Sazan, the same strange story is repeated, according to which Sazan is nothing but a barren rock, with snakes, bushes and military rust. Thankfully, Prime Minister Rama found another trap to trap our barren Sazan, which the people of Vlora and the Albanians were eager to get rid of.

If you believe the Renaissance propaganda, there was no need at all to have a public discussion on the fate of strategic assets like the Port of Durres, Sazani, and Zvërnec. It would be enough to hand these "trash" over to some naive billionaires like Alabar or Jared Kushner, who will develop them in our interest.

Here we cannot help but pause to contemplate with curiosity the adoration that Albanian socialists have for billionaires. Elite tourism, yacht ports, strategic investors, are refrains that they and their sympathizers constantly repeat in our media. The socialists' adoration for billionaire and yacht tourists is surpassed only by their disdain for "ordinary tourists", such as those coming from Kosovo or the east.

According to this narrative, Albania can only be developed by foreign billionaires like Kushner, in collaboration with our local millionaires, by buying it up piece by piece to build super luxurious and exclusive resorts where ordinary Albanian citizens can only enter as waiters, dishwashers, and cleaners.

Problemi është se bota është e mbushur me shembuj rezortesh e investimesh luksose nga miliarderët më të fuqishëm të globit që rrethohen nga mizerja. Ndoshta shembulli më i mirë është ishulli i famshëm i Hauait ku jetojnë dhe kanë investuar miliarderët kryesor të globit, që nga Mark Zuckenberg deri tek Operah Winfrey.

Pavarësisht miliarderëve pafund që ka tërhequr, dhe investimeve që ata kanë kryer, Hauai sot mbetet një nga shtetet më të varfra të SHBA-ve, me nivele rekord varfërie dhe të pastrehësh. Turizmi super-elitar me kapital të huaj i ka çuar çmimet në stratosferë ndërkohë që rrogat e banorëve vendas, që janë reduktuar në kamarierë dhe pastrues, nuk janë të mjaftueshme për të blerë banesë apo për të bërë një jetë të denjë.

Pa përmendur faktin që turzimi elitar, si ai që është zhvilluar në Hauai, është i paqëndrueshëm sepse rezortet super luksoze harxhojnë sasi të frikëshme uji dhe energjie elektrike, sidomos gjatë verës kur këto burime janë të kufizuara. Kjo do të thotë që shpesh këto investime super-elitare përkeqësojnë krizat energjitike dhe ujore që janë bërë gjithnjë e më të shpeshta si pasojë e ndryshimeve klimatike.

Ajo që na mëson rasti i turizmit elitar në Hauait, por edhe rastet e plot rezorteve super-luksoze në detin Karibe dhe në Amerikën Latine, është që turizmi elitar dhe ekskluziv që kontrollohet nga investitorë të huaj të fuqishëm shpesh e rëndon situatën ekonomike të banorëve vendas, sepse rrit çmimet, eleminon hotelerinë vendase, teksa prodhon punësim të cilësisë së ulët për ta.

Ndërkohë kontributi i këtij lloj turizmi në buxhetin e shtetit shpesh është i vogël sepse investitorët strategjik janë aq të fuqishëm dhe të lidhur me qeverinë saqë paguajnë pak ose aspak taksa në buxhetin e shtetit. Nuk është çudi që së shpejti të mësojmë se Jared Kushner me statusin e investitorit strategjik nuk do paguajë fare taksa në 5 apo 10 vitet e para të aktivitetit të rezortit të tij. Si mund ti kërkojmë taksa një investitori që po sakrifikon kaq shumë për Shqipërinë duke u bërë pronar i një ishulli plot ferra dhe gjarpërinj?

Të kuptohemi, nuk jam kundër zhvillimit turistik të Sazanit, Zvërnecit apo të Portit të Durrësit. Ama idea që ky zhvillim mund të vijë vetëm nga Alabari dhe Kushneri në bashkëpunim me oligarkët vendas është propagandë politike dhe jo një realitet ekonomik. Zhvillimi i turizmit elitar dhe ekskluziv që propozon Rama, Kushner dhe oligarkët tanë është një turizëm përjashtues që i redukton vendasit në kamarierë dhe pastrues dhe jo në pronarë dhe përfitues direkt të pasurive të tyre natyrore.

Ekzistojnë plot shembuj të një turzmi më përfshirës, më autentik dhe më të qëndrueshëm se ai i tipit Hauai. Ka shembuj si ishujt Ibiza apo Mallorca ku banorët e varfër të ishullit u transformuan në sipërmarrës turistik dhe përfituan në mënyrë direkte nga bumi turistik i ishullit të tyre.

Such experiences could be repeated in Albania. Instead of one strategic investor, like Kushner or Alabar, Sazani, Zvërneci and the Port of Durres could be opened to hundreds of small and medium-sized local investors. Of course, with planning and investment in infrastructure by the central government.

Instead of Sazani becoming Hawaii, it could become Ibiza. Instead of a closed, non-transparent and exclusionary investment, an open and inclusive tourism could be developed. Instead of 300 Albanian waiters and cleaners, Sazani, the Port of Durres and Zvrneci could produce 300 Albanian entrepreneurs, medium, small but also large.

Instead of a large, super-elite resort where Albanians cannot set foot and where billionaires rest inside a golden cage, we could have dozens of small, ecological, and authentic hotels that could be enjoyed by all Albanian and foreign citizens, even without being millionaires.

This would be a strategic and inclusive investment, with a major impact on the local economy and citizens' pockets. What the Rama government is offering us is simply a political investment where the main beneficiaries are Kushner, his local partners, and the power of Prime Minister Rama, who has already guaranteed Trump's goodwill.

For the Albanians of our spectacular Ionian coast, Sazani will be a forbidden dream that increases prices, consumes water and energy, and produces mediocre employment for the vast majority of them. They know very well that Sazani is much more than a rock with snakes, it is a natural wonder that will now only be enjoyed by millionaires. This is the tourism that our “socialist” government proposes to us.
