The Polish scientific institute calls cats an alien "species".

A Polish scientific institute has classified domestic cats as an "invasive alien species", citing the damage they cause to birds and other wildlife.

Some cat lovers have reacted emotionally to this determination by criticizing the institute's chief scientist.

Wojciech Solarz, a biologist at the Polish state Academy of Sciences, was not prepared for the public backlash when he entered "Felis catus", the scientific name for the common house cat, into a national database of 'alien species' run by Academy Institute for Nature Conservation.
