Who is Alket Hatija, called "Drug Lord?"

Alket Hatija was arrested in 2017 on account of Italian justice. He was wanted in connection with a 20-year prison sentence in absentia in Milan.

The sentence for him was given after he is accused of transporting to Milan, in the years 2003-2004, 350 kilograms of heroin and 190 kg of cocaine, these cargoes worth 35 to 45 million euros.

He was handcuffed on July 8, but the Court of Durrës declared his arrest illegal. Four days later, on July 11, 2017, he was released.

His release sparked debate, while later, in 2019, the Durrës Appeal requested his re-arrest, pending his extradition to Italy, to serve a 20-year prison sentence.

The Court of Appeal decided as a security measure that of "arrest in prison" for the "Drug Baron", who was accused by the Italian authorities of trafficking 350 kilograms of heroin.

The Court of Appeal asked the Police to arrest the 46-year-old, but he was no longer in his apartment. The Court of First Instance in Durrës argued Hatija's release based on the request of the accused's lawyer, according to which the 46-year-old had been convicted once before in Albania for this crime with the same facts, a sentence which he has repaid.

It turns out that Hatija was convicted in 2008 and then released in 2014, after claims that his wife suffered from a chronic illness.

According to Italian authorities, Alket Hatija was one of the biggest bosses of drug trafficking from Albania to Italy./ CNA
