Young Albanian man lost his life at a construction site in Britain/ Tragedy

A 19-year-old Albanian man tragically lost his life in the UK while working on a construction site. The young man, Renols Lleshi, was helping to dismantle scaffolding in the terrace garden of an apartment block under construction when he stepped on a ventilation shaft, and as a result fell from six floors. The serious incident occurred on July 5, 2023.

Meanwhile, an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the incident could have been prevented because the ventilation shaft was covered only by a sheet of plaster and roofing foam.

The inadequate coverage never came to light because regular inspections of the building did not include the roof garden area and no warning was given to the scaffolding team.

Construction company Jerram Falkus Construction Limited admitted breaching the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and was fined £42,200. The company was also ordered to pay a £2,000 surcharge and £5,000 costs at the City of London Magistrates’ Court.

"Falls from height are one of the biggest causes of workplace deaths and serious injuries. This was a completely avoidable incident which led to the death of a young man. My thoughts are with Renols' family and friends ," said HSE inspector Natalie Prince.

The young man's father also reacted to the investigation, saying that losing his son becomes even more difficult when it is learned that his death was completely avoidable.

"My family and I are devastated by the loss of Renols. Knowing that his death was caused by an accident that was completely avoidable only makes our loss even more difficult to cope with. We are grateful to the Health and Safety Executive for their efforts to investigate the accident and prosecute those responsible for Renols' death. However, nothing anyone can do can bring our loved one back or ease our grief in any way ," the young man's father said. /CNA
