Fires in Greece/ 20 victims, dozens injured, 79 people arrested

The fire situation in Greece continues to be alarming. According to the Greek media, so far 20 people have lost their lives and dozens more are injured.

It is learned that the police have arrested 79 people for arson. Civil Defense Minister Vassilis Kikilias said there had been several attempts by arsonists to start other fires on Mount Parnitha, northwest of Athens.

Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis told Greek public broadcaster ERT that of the 140 fire-related arrests, 79 were related to arson. Hundreds of firefighters across Greece are battling the deadly blazes.

The huge fire front that broke out on Saturday near the port city of Alexandroupolis has become the biggest in history in the EU, according to European Commissioner Janez Lenarcic.

Meanwhile, on Mount Parnitha near Athens, fires have broken out in a forest adjacent to the capital, threatening a national park.

Earlier this week, the bodies of 19 people believed to be migrants, including children, were found near the Evros region in northeastern Greece.

A shepherd also lost his life from the fires in the region of Boeotia on Monday.

According to Kikilia, the country was experiencing the worst summer since the introduction of fire danger maps in 2009.

Just last month, thousands of people were forced to flee wildfires on the Greek island of Rhodes, as fires broke out in other parts of the country./ CNA
