The President of Egypt, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, won a third six-year term with 89.6% of the votes, the electoral commission announced.

The former army chief defeated three low-profile candidates, with the runner-up securing just 4.5%.

Main opposition candidate Ahmed Tantaëy withdrew months before last week's election, alleging intimidation and violence against his campaign camp.

Egypt's faltering economy and the war in Gaza were key electoral issues.

Sisi, who is 69, first became president in 2014.

With Egypt's economy heavily dependent on imports, the prices of basic goods have risen beyond the reach of many households and a black market for foreign currency has flourished./ CNA
