Israeli forces say they have uncovered an enormous concrete and steel tunnel designed to transport vehicles carrying Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip to the border.

Leveling or damaging hundreds of kilometers of underground tunnels and bunkers is among the goals of Israel's offensive.

"Without destroying the Hamas tunnels, we cannot destroy Hamas. He has spent millions of dollars on this project," said Israel's army spokesman, Daniel Hagari.

Among the regions that Hamas attacked on October 7, when it launched the surprise attack, was the Erez border crossing between Gaza and Israel. According to the Israeli army, the exit of the tunnel was located only 100 meters south of the checkpoint in Erez.

The tunnel has a depth of 50 meters and is 3 meters wide. According to Israeli officials, millions of dollars must have been spent on its construction.

Israel's army spokesman Daniel Hagari said the tunnel is 4 kilometers long, enough to reach the northern part of Gaza, ruled by Hamas, now a devastated area.

Hamas did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.

To give an idea of ??how big the tunnel is, Mr. Hagari showed a group of journalists a video showing Mohammed Sinwari, the brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwari, who is also a key operative for the group, sitting in the seat of a vehicle that was moving inside the tunnel./ VOA
