The leader of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, has died at the age of 86, Kuwait state television announced.

The sheikh has led oil-rich Kuwait for just three years after taking over from his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah", it was said through a statement published on the television channel.

Sheikh Nawaf was appointed crown prince in 2006 and assumed the office of emir in 2020.

He previously served as Minister of Defense and Minister of the Interior.

The new emir of Kuwait has been announced as the crown prince, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Kuwait - which has a population of 4.8 million, including 3.4 million foreign workers - is the world's sixth-largest country by oil reserves, and is a major ally of the United States.

The parliament of this country has the most powers in all the Gulf countries, and the opposition openly criticizes the leaders.
