US officials in Israel discuss protection of Palestinian civilians

Israeli forces carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, ahead of a visit by senior White House officials who are expected to discuss the next phase of Israel's war against Hamas as well as efforts to protect Palestinian civilians.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the war cabinet and President Herzog on Thursday and Friday. According to the White House, Mr. Sullivan will use the meetings to discuss "measures being taken to make military interventions more precise."

Mr. Sullivan is also expected to discuss the calls of the United States to Israel to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom border crossing. This would make it possible for aid not to enter the area only through the Rafahau crossing.

This week, Israel began checking aid trucks in Kerem Shalom, but they must be sent to Rafah.

Mr. Sullivan first went to Saudi Arabia. The White House said he discussed with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman "efforts to create the conditions for a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians and to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza."

While providing support to Israel in the fight against Hamas after the October 7 attack, United States President Joe Biden and other officials have expressed concern over the number of civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip./ VOA
