Hamas ambushes Israeli troops in Gaza/ Nine soldiers are killed

Nine Israeli soldiers were killed on Wednesday after being ambushed by members of Hamas - the radical Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - the Israeli army announced.

Israel is facing strong resistance in areas it has besieged and bombarded for the past two months.

Israel's air and ground war has left thousands of Palestinian civilians dead and forced 85 percent of Gaza's population from their homes, sparking outrage around the world.

The United States has repeatedly called on Israel to take greater measures to spare civilians, despite blocking an international call for a ceasefire and urgently sending ammunition to its close ally.

About six weeks after Israeli soldiers overran northern Gaza following a Hamas attack on October 7, infantry are still facing heavy fighting against Hamas fighters in and around Gaza City.

Fierce fighting broke out overnight and into Wednesday morning in many areas, especially in Shiaja, a densely populated neighborhood that was the battleground of fierce fighting in the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas.

Troops raiding several buildings in Shiaya on Tuesday lost contact with four soldiers who were attacked, the Israeli military said. When other soldiers launched a rescue operation for them, they were ambushed by Hamas members.

Among the nine dead were Colonel Itzhak Ben Basat, 44 - who is the highest-ranking officer to be killed in the ground invasion - and Colonel Tomer Grinberg, the battalion commander./ REL
