Draft agreement COP28/ Call for a global transition away from fossil fuels

The final draft of the COP28 agreement has been published at the UN climate summit in Dubai.

The draft is a call for countries to move away from the use of fossil fuels in energy systems, but not to phase them out, as many summit participants have called for.

If humanity wants to limit the increase in temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius, there must be deep, rapid and sustainable reductions in the non-use of fuels in energy systems.

Norway's climate minister Espen Barth Eide says fossil fuels have always been a big problem.

At no previous conference of the parties, or COP, have nations agreed to move away from oil, gas and coal.

All 198 countries must agree to a deal, delegates will meet soon to decide.
