Hungary threatens Bulgaria that it can veto its entry into Schengen

Hungary threatens Bulgaria that it can veto its entry into Schengen
Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto.

Hungary will veto Bulgaria's proposed entry into the Schengen free movement zone unless it ends the transit tax on Russian gas, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

The warning about the veto comes after the agreement reached on Thursday between the member states of the European Union, except Hungary, to start the talks for Ukraine's membership in the European bloc.

On that day, the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, left the room, leaving open the possibility of approval of the decision.

Orbán's resistance in Brussels has been rewarded with points in Moscow, with which Orbán maintains regular contact despite the start of the war in Ukraine.

Moscow continues to supply Hungary with gas.

Citing the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, the Ministry has made it clear to Bulgaria that the veto will be used if the tax on imported gas continues.

"We have made it clear to the Bulgarians that if they continue this measure, if they damage the security of our supply chain, then we will use the veto for Schengen", said Szijjarto.

He has said that the Hungarians will repeal the veto as soon as the transit tax is removed.

Although Western European countries make great efforts to avoid Russian gas, Hungary has received 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, according to an agreement signed with Russia in 2021./ REL
