Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the time was not yet right for the planned counteroffensive to regain control of the territory from the Russian occupation troops.

"We need a little more time," Mr. Zelensky said in an interview with British media made public on Thursday.

Preparations for the counteroffensive include training of Ukrainian forces by Western partners, as well as shipments of ammunition, tanks and air defense systems to boost the Ukrainian side's capabilities.

"With [what we have] we can launch a counteroffensive and be successful," President Zelensky said.

"But we would lose a lot of people. I think that would be unacceptable," he said.

Late Wednesday, Admiral Bob Bauer, who chairs NATO's Military Committee, told reporters that Ukraine will be able to fight back with better weapons, although it has fewer soldiers available than Russia.

"The Russians will have to focus on numbers, on a larger number of recruits and mobilized, poorly trained and with old materials and not as precisely as the newer ones," he added./ VOA
