Fighting between Israel and the Palestinians intensifies

Palestinian extremists fired hundreds of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Wednesday as Israel continued airstrikes that have killed 23 Palestinians, including three militants and at least 10 civilians.

An Egyptian state television station reported that Egypt, which has often negotiated between the two sides, was brokering a ceasefire. But ceasefire efforts appeared to be faltering as fighting intensified late Wednesday and neither side showed any signs of backing down.

In the early hours of Thursday, the Israeli military said it targeted the commander of Islamic Jihad's rocket squad, Ali Ghali, in an airstrike on a building in the southern Gaza Strip.

The military said he was holed up in an apartment and that two other militants from the group were also killed in the airstrike on an apartment complex in Khan Younis.

Ghali ordered and participated in rocket attacks against Israel in recent months.

In a televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel had dealt a severe blow to the militants, but that the efforts were not over.

"We tell the terrorists and those who send them. We see you everywhere. You can't hide, and we choose the moment and the time to hit you," he said.

The recent fighting was the fiercest between the two sides in recent months. But in a sign that both sides were trying to show restraint, Israel avoided attacks on the ruling Hamas militant group, targeting only the smaller and more extremist faction of Islamic Jihad.
