The study reveals / This is what giant pandas living in zoos suffer from

Giant pandas living in captivity can suffer from "jet lag" if their body clocks don't match their environment, scientists say, reports CNN .

This can have a significant impact on the well-being and behavior of endangered species, according to a new study published Monday in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.

Like all animals, pandas have a circadian clock—an internal body clock that runs in approximately 24-hour cycles—and it is regulated by signals from their environment. But problems arise when the signals they are exposed to in captivity don't match those of their natural environment, the study found.

This can be very significant considering the welfare of animals in captivity, many of which are at high risk of extinction in the wild - including giant pandas.

Giant pandas were chosen as the focus for the study in part because they live a very seasonal life. Migrations occur in the spring because pandas eat a certain species of bamboo and go in search of new shoots. Spring is also mating season.

These cameras enabled the scientists to monitor the pandas' behavior over a 24-hour period. Meanwhile, other factors such as regular visits from zookeepers can also affect the animals' circadian clock./ CNA
