Five American citizens detained in Iran are expected to be released today and leave Iran on a Qatari plane in exchange for five Iranians detained in the United States. The prisoner exchange agreement between the two opposing countries was brokered by Doha. The deal also includes unlocking $6 billion in Iranian funds from a South Korean bank.

The Qatar plane was on standby after the United States and Iran were notified, according to a source familiar with the matter, that Iranian funds had been transferred to bank accounts in Qatar. " The American detainees are being sent to the Qatar plane ," the source said.

The release of funds allows for a prisoner exchange under an agreement reached after months of talks between the United States and Iran. The two countries have deep disagreements over Tehran's nuclear ambitions and other issues.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the funds, blocked in South Korea after US sanctions on Iran were tightened in 2018, will be available to Tehran on Monday.
