Germany and Austria have suspended asylum for Syrian refugees after the rebels took control. Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees said 47,270 applications were affected by the application freeze.
Austria has also decided to put a pause on its asylum requests, the Interior Ministry confirmed to local media. 7300 applications will be affected by the decision.
The start of the civil war in 2011, sparked by popular discontent and the pro-democracy protests of the Arab Spring, forced 14 million Syrians to flee the country. It is estimated that around one million have fled to Germany.
After nearly two weeks of intense clashes, opposition forces Hayar Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of key areas and eventually declared victory in the capital Damascus, ending the country's dynastic rule by Bashar al-Assad.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Sunday that the end of al-Assad's rule in Syria was good news "for now" and stressed that the priority should be on restoring law and order in the country./ CNA
