Authorities in the Dominican Republic have seized the largest amount of cocaine. It is about 9.5 tons of cocaine which was headed towards Europe.

Concealed in a shipment of bananas, officials found 9,500 kg of the drug at a port in the capital, Santo Domingo.

The cocaine was hidden in 320 bags with an estimated value of $250m (£196m).

At least 10 people connected to the shipment are under investigation.

Communications chief Carlos Denvers said: "Several unknown individuals attempted to transfer the drugs to another container that was to be sent on a ship to Belgium."

The haul far exceeds the 2,580kg seizure made by Dominican authorities at the same port in 2006.

Monitoring agencies have reported that the Caribbean is re-emerging as a major drug trafficking route from Colombia to Europe.

A report last year found that cocaine use is increasing in several Western European countries, including the UK, Belgium, France and Spain.

Europe accounted for 21% of the world's cocaine users in 2020, according to a United Nations report.

Evidence suggests that drug use is having serious health consequences, with recent figures showing that deaths from drug poisoning in England and Wales have reached their highest level in 30 years, driven by a 30% rise in deaths from cocaine./ CNA
