Only 35 years old/ Ecuador elects the youngest president in history
Businessman Daniel Noboa

Businessman Daniel Noboa has become the youngest president in the history of Ecuador, at the age of 35. Noboa won Sunday's election with 52.3% of the vote, ahead of Luisa González's 47.7%.

The 35-year-old, of the National Democratic Action party, is the son of Álvaro Noboa, who ran for president five times. Noboa will only be in office for 17 months.

He will rule the country until May 2025, due to the fact that the current election was called because outgoing President Guillermo Lasso dissolved parliament amid an impeachment trial.

After his victory in the second round of voting, Noboa told supporters: "Tomorrow we start work for this new Ecuador, we will start working to rebuild a country hit hard by violence, by corruption and by hatred."

Ecuador has seen an increase in gang violence in recent years, and the presidential campaign was marred by the August assassination of candidate Fernando Villavicencio. As a journalist, he campaigned against corruption.

Crime has increased dramatically and Ecuador has become a hub for drug gangs due to its location between Colombia and Peru, the world's two main producers of cocaine.

Noboa has suggested transferring some of Ecuador's most hardened criminals to prison ships off the coast of Ecuador in order to break up prison gangs that are engaged in a deadly war inside the country's prisons.

He also wants to increase security at Ecuador's borders and ports to cut off key drug-trafficking routes, suggesting the installation of scanners to ensure more cocaine shipments are intercepted.

He has also tried to attract voters by promising to increase employment opportunities./ CNA
