Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the emergency cabinet for the first time on Sunday, saying the national unity displayed in recent days has sent a message at home and abroad.

The meeting was held at army headquarters in Tel Aviv, and began with a minute's silence to honor the 1,300 Israelis killed by the militant group Hamas on October 7.

Welcoming opposition lawmaker Benny Gantz, who has joined the government along with several party members, Netanyahu said all ministers are working "round the clock, on a common front".

"Hamas has thought that it will destroy us. We are the ones who will destroy Hamas", Netanyahu said, adding that the show of unity sends a message to "the nation, the enemy and the world".

The Israeli army is preparing for an offensive in Gaza to fight Hamas.

It has ordered over 1 million Palestinians to move from north to south of Gaza.

The United Nations has criticized the evacuation orders and warned of a humanitarian disaster.

The Israeli army has bombed Hamas targets in Gaza, since the militant group's unprecedented attacks on Israeli civilians last weekend./ REL
