Australians vote against constitutional recognition of indigenous peoples

Voters in Australia on Saturday rejected a proposal to change the state constitution to recognize indigenous people in the country.

In the referendum, support was requested for the creation of a parliamentary body that would advise the government in the future on issues related to this community.

In order to make constitutional changes, an overwhelming majority is necessary.

According to the Australian Electoral Commission, this means over 50 per cent of the vote must be in favor of change in four of Australia's six main regions.

After 9.1 million votes counted, out of 17.7 million in total, the hopes of creating a majority have been extinguished.

According to polls, 58 percent of voters voted against the changes and 42 percent were in favor.

The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has said that he respects the decision of the Australian people and the democratic process.

"Now it's up to us to come together and find a way to reconcile. I am optimistic that we can and should find it".

Yes23 – the name of the campaign for the recognition of indigenous people with the constitution – has said in a statement that the result is not what it expected.

In May 1967 Australians voted to change the constitution so that indigenous people could be considered part of the Australian population./ REL
